Planned Parenthood is…

SO Much more than abortion services.

I’m shocked that Susan G Komen Foundation discontinued their support of Planned Parenthood, an organization that aids thousands and thousands of women to get clinical breast exams and referrals to mammograms to help detect breast cancer. Isn’t this foundation for breast cancer research and helping women (and men) who have breast cancer?

WTF. Someone please explain this to me?

I’m officially done with hearing about what important women in our Capital is wearing. I do not care what she was wearing. I care about her achievements and what she has accomplished. I also don’t hear anyone talking about what kind of tailored suit the President, house speaker, or vice president was wearing and how expensive those were.

I get that this is People magazine, and it’s focus is not politics. But I’m pretty sure I could find other articles from other sources that are considered “news” sources about what she was wearing. Lets stop focusing on what a woman’s outer appearance is, and focus on the work that she has been doing, and what she has accomplished, alright??

Um, how cute is this?

i’m kind of getting tired of Katy Perry

her music all sounds the same to me.

I’m prepared for hate mail :) (just be known, she is talented, I’m just tired of her that’s all-her music is way over played.)

This girl is smart! She has a great view on media marketing!

I just saw your post on "GWTDT". I just saw it tonight and I agree with you, that based on how graphic that scene was, there definitely needed to be some sort of warning for people who may be triggered. I actually put on my Tumblr asking people what exactly the rape scene was, so I would be prepared beforehand. I wasn't raped but I was molested as a child, so that kind of violence can still be triggering. It was definitely hard to watch, to say the least.

Thanks for agreeing with me. Anyone who has been a victim of any type of violence or a friends of people who have experienced sexual assault/child abuse/etc could be triggered by that scene.

It is my ideal, that if there is sexual violence (and really, any type of violence) in a film that there will be more than “may contain violence” warning before the movie. And that after the movie is played, but before the credits roll that there is a message about the hotline number or other national resources. Again, it’s my ideal and people may say that’s too sensitive but people should be able to see movies without being taken by surprise by a triggering response because of the scene.

Johnny Galecki about gay rumors [x]

Wow. Standing ovation Johnny Galecki.

Yep.  This is how you do it.

if all men could take this approach…we’d have no “no homo” anymore and that would be grand.

Pay attention. This is how we progress as a society.

Standing ovation indeed!

It’s sad when something so basic is considered progressive for our society. But still, way to go!

I just saw Girl with the Dragon Tattoo last night. I feel the same way. Overall, it was a good film and the actors did a great job, especially Rooney Mara. Story was very interesting. However, I too had no idea about the rape scene and it ruined my whole take on the movie. It was so graphic that I was distracted for the follow 30min, I couldn't even concentrate. I have never been a victim to such a horrible thing, but I agree that it was triggering and as a female, it made me very uncomvfortable

thanks for responding :) I have gotten a few direct messages about people’s similar responses. I was definitely distracted well after and really had to take deep breaths to calm myself down.

It is definitely triggering, and I encourage you to tell your friends about the scene if they talk about seeing it. That’s what I’m doing. I’d have least liked to have been prepared for it, or know to skip seeing it the theater, wait til it comes out on DVD and then fast forward that part.

Regarding your post on TGWTDT, I am a survivor myself. I went to the movie knowing the rape scene was there, but until it came on I didn't realize just how graphic it would be. It was pretty triggering and because of that I don't feel comfortable recommending the movie to other people without a warning. I was reeling over that for a good chunk of the movie honestly. I saw it a second time then, and was better prepared. Others might disagree, but I find Lisbeth to be an empowering character.

Thanks for letting me know your thoughts on this. I was surprised to look around and not seeing others (though, there may have been and they weren’t in my line of view) react the way I was. I am telling everyone I know as well about the scene, and the graphic violence of it.

I like Lisbeth too and find her empowering in some ways. She is a definite female heroine that people haven’t seen in the media a lot (if at all)

I saw your post on the rape scene in GWADT, and I agree with you. It really made me sick and I had to look away some. It really bothered my boyfriend as well. It was quite graphic and I can't imagine if someone who has been raped had been sitting in that theater. Also, I do not suggest ever watching "Last House On The Left". There was a very long one in there, I couldn't help but cry. Anyways, I'm glad I saw someone else have a similar reaction to this.

Thanks for messaging me about this, I am glad I am not the only one to feel this way. Thanks for the heads up about Last House on the Left!

I just wish I was prepared for the scene, if I was I probably would have the same reaction, but at least knew it was coming.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

(may contain some vague spoilers)

I saw GWTDT yesterday. I enjoyed the movie, thought Rooney Mara did a fantastic job as Lisbeth. I started to read the book a while ago, but I couldn’t get into it but I think I’ll have a go at it again once I finish my book I’m reading currently.

However, I wish I knew about the (spoiler) rape scene in the movie, and how violent/graphic it was. Not that there are other movies with rape scenes in them or anything but there was one scene (there were a few sexual violence scenes) where i had no choice but to look away and cry. My boyfriend was there and he was great to hold my hand during it as I looked away.

I have been volunteering for a sexual violence crisis hotline/outreach group for 8 years now. I have as much knowledge as anyone who is not a direct survivor can have, as to what survivors may go through during the violent crime, and afterwards. I wish there was a warning somewhere other than “may contain violence” because it could seriously trigger someone. I was triggered as someone who has friends who are survivors, and helped people in crisis.

I know this is not the only movie with sexual violence, and I have seen others. The one on the top of my head is Derailed with Jennifer Aniston. It was graphic and my stomach churn, they didn’t show certain images as they did in GWTDT. I am not saying there are degrees of rape (no way!) but that the way the movie directors and producers decided to depict it on screen was different. I hate that our society is so desensitized that I’ll probably be criticized for being “too sensitive” about this.

Is there anyone else who had similar reaction to this scene, or have thoughts about the implications of this scene in the girl with the dragon tattoo?

If you want to bring Christ, family and other traditional values into Christmas again, why don’t you start with being a little bit more Christian-like and stop criticizing other’s Christmas cards!

really CNN?

Did you really put “testimony on Penn State shower scene”???

We all know what you are referring to, but do you have to have that headline that makes it sound like a sexy scene in a movie rather than what it is-child sexual abuse which is a CRIME?

-some rushed reporter made a poor choice of words in the headline, the part of the story that the least attention is put into

“OMG THEY’RE CONDONING CHILD ABUSE!”

Look at yourself, tumblr.

I’m glad they are putting attention to the issue, and I never said they are condoning child abuse. But using this kind of language is harmful. It’s harmful because it desensitizes child abuse. It’s harmful because it adds to our culture where we continue to desensitize violence. And really, the media isn’t paying enough attention to a lot of issues, and when they do it uses headlines that have poor choice of words because it will grab the readers attention to get more  readership.
