So interesting piece of information that I found out about those DOVE love your body commercials. When I first saw these commercials, I was excited to see women of all different shapes, sizes, ethnicities, age, etc on this and that it promoted healthy body image, and loving yourself the way you are. Great! However, I was poorly uninformed.
DOVE is owned by Unilever. You know what else Unilever owns? Axe body products. They are infamous for those degrading tv commercials where women are are seen as sex objects, dressed in scantily clad bathing suits while running, and will automatically change for the men in these commericals
And you know what UNILEVER said when there was criticism on these AXE commercials? “ Axe campaign is intended as a spoof and “not meant to be taken literally”.
Yeah, so does DOVE really want women to accept who they are, to have a healthy body image? Maybe.
But what my thought is-all of this is a marketing scheme. They are selling a product, not healthy body image. They are using the healthy body image commercials as a way to sell you a product, because they know women will buy into it. Just like they know men will buy into women in bikinis running and angels who will give up their role just for them.
